Bio

I was born in 1980 in Guimarães, a small town in the north of Portugal. At the age of 18, I moved to Porto to attend college and 5 years later I obtained my Master’s degree in Nutrition Sciences. In 2004, I moved to The Netherlands to pursue a PhD in Human Biology that I completed successfully in 2008. A couple of years later I moved to Berlin, where I built a family and a home, and in 2022 I moved to the Boston area in the US.

With a biology background, I built a successful scientific career working as a cancer researcher for the past 20 years, both in academia and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Despite being an art lover for as long as I can remember, it was not until the beginning of 2021 that I decided to create my own art. In the middle of a global pandemic and going through a period of maternity leave, I felt an immense need to find my own space among an unusually stressful and isolated time. Creating art became a life-changing new passion and mission.

As an emerging artist, I have already exhibited my work in several virtual and physical shows and saw some of my artworks published in different Art Magazines.

Statement

My abstract minimalism has a strong focus on neutral and monochromatic tones and is often enriched by a variety of textures. My apparently silent paintings hide countless layers of mark-making, collages, and textures. They are allusive to the urban roughness of Berlin and other cities that deeply influenced my aesthetic. In their essence, they are a metaphor for the personal traits that I appreciate the most: quietness and self-reflection hiding a deep, kind, and compassionate core that needs to be discovered. My interpretation of minimalism is not emptiness, but rather introspection; it’s about the silence that precedes a meaningful conversation and an invitation to look beyond the surface.
